Are you an Inventor or Entrepreneur?

inventor vs. entrepreneurWhat differentiates an entrepreneur from an inventor? Although both can be considered idea people there seems to be a clear divide between the two labels.

Inventors are creative people, the ones who see something where others see nothing. Inventors are right brain type of people.  Characteristics most associated with right brain type people AKA the inventor are as follows:

  • Creativity
  • Imagination
  • Holistic Thinking
  • Intuition
  • Arts (Motor skill)
  • Rhythm (Beats)
  • Non-Verbal
  • Feelings
  • Visualization
  • Tune of Songs
  • Daydreaming

Entrepreneurs are the planners, the type of people that write a business plan and account for every last detail. Entrepreneurs are often a little more left brain.  Characteristics most associated with left brain type people AKA the entrepreneur are as follows:

  • Logic
  • Analysis
  • Sequencing
  • Linear
  • Mathematics
  • Language
  • Facts
  • Think in words
  • Words of songs
  • Computation

Both entrepreneurs and inventors can be considered risk takers, however the way they approach the idea phase of an invention or new product is very different. Though right-brain or non-verbal thinking is often regarded as more ‘creative’, there is no right or wrong here; it is merely two different ways of thinking. One is not better than the other, just as being right-handed is not ‘superior’ to being left-handed. What is important is to be aware that there are different ways of thinking, and by knowing what your natural preference is, you can pay attention to your less dominant side to improve the same. Optimally an Inventor and Entrepreneur could make one heck of a team.
